Children’s Art and Essay Contests 2023
The Almanzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder Association announces two annual youth contests. Entries for each must be received by mail or at the farm by June 27th. Awards will be announced on Saturday, July 15th at the Scottish Fling at Almanzo Wilder Farm!
All youth who have recently completed fourth grade or lower are invited to write an essay of 175-250 words describing one day as a child in any season on an area farm in the 1860s with the book Farmer Boy in mind. The boy writing a winning essay will be invited to be Honorary Almanzo Wilder for 2023. The girl writing a winning essay will be invited to be Honorary Laura Ingalls for this season.
In addition, students aged 12 or younger as of June 30, 2023 who have read Farmer Boy are invited to create an artistic expression of part of the book or the farm on which Almanzo grew up. Size will not be larger than 9″x12″. Medium may be one or more of the following: chalk/pastel, watercolor, pencil, colored pencil, pen and ink, crayon, or marker. Each entry must be the work of one student and must be given a title. Sculpture or photography are not included in this contest. Art will be on display at Almanzo Wilder Farm July 8-15.
